Brooklyn Local 1 Ale

June 13, 2011 – 3:39 am
I had the Brooklyn Local 1 ale today with dinner. It was very good, with citrus and earthy tastes with a sweet aftertaste. This beer has a lot of flavor. Don't expect to quench your thirst like you would with a lager or light beer! However it's not an overbearingly bold beer either. It's nothing like the crazy IPA offerings and it's very drinkable even if you normally drink lighter beers. If all you know is bud light, it's probably not the right 'real beer' to start with. I picked my pint up on the north west side at HEB off 249 and it cost about $10 for one pint.

Microsoft’s Bing is garbage and annoys me to no end…

December 17, 2009 – 8:22 am
Besides being a crappy search engine which I can't find a reason to use, bing has been annoying the living shit out of me. I normally loathe using IE, but am forced to use it to test web designs and to visit a few sites written by idiots that can't make a site that works. Bing has taken over as my default search engine in IE on Windows 7. I set it to Google, but it goes back to Bing whenever I restart IE. If you're working on a fresh install of Windows Server 2003 and using IE6 you will find visiting Microsoft's windows update site rather challenging.

It’s snowing today in Houston!

December 5, 2009 – 3:41 am
Houston normally sees snow about once every four years. The last 3 we have seen snow or at least ice storms! This year the snow was actually starting to stick. So much for global warming. Pictures included!

Secure /tmp, /var/tmp, /dev/shm

May 7, 2009 – 6:20 pm
By default CentOS and RHEL are not very secure when it comes to temporary directories. This is a big problem because an exploitable PHP script can be used to launch many nasty processes such as an FTP brute force scanner. If you have many clients its inevitable that some of them will have such exploitable scripts at some point. This also means that you will have to deal with the abuse complaints resulting from such exploits which will cost you time that you and your staff could spend on marketing or helping customers. You should use this guide to secure all new RHEL/CentOS installs. I may release a full security script at some point when it's further tested.

Little Bear Custom Holsters

May 3, 2009 – 9:13 am
Review of "Little Bear Custom Holsters": As all gun owners should know, a good holster is extremely important. For open carry holsters are less problematic, but for concealed carry any old holster wont do! You MUST have a quality holster if you want to be comfortable and still reach your gun in an emergency. A quality inside waistband holster should be moulded to your exact gun, fit you well, stay attatched to your belt when you draw and help "print" (expose the fact that you carry) less.  Looking great doesent hurt either! For all of this I recommend Little Bear Custom Holsters of Jacksonville, Florida.

1TB Seagate Drive Failure

March 3, 2009 – 5:07 am
I've been a HUGE advocate of Seagate through the years (especially years that WD SUCKED!) After today I think I may use more Western Digital. I bought a new Seagate brand 1TB (1000GB) drive in December of '08 for my personal desktop. I was impressed with the performance of the drive and everything seemed fine until tonight. The day started with a mildly amusing trip to Fry's Electronics and a mostly uneventful installation of a new video card, EVGA GeForce 260 C216 Superclocked. After the system rebooted I noticed my "storage002" drive , the 1TB Seagate ST31000340AS in question, was showing only a 32MB RAW partition in Vista Ultimate.

GOP is FAIL @ Internets

February 22, 2009 – 11:22 pm
This Thursday Republicans proved they can be "fail at the internets" just like the Democrats. They introduced two bills which would require anyone operating a Wi-Fi router to retain a two year access log. This legislature would allow a subpoena to recover a two year log of users. Known as the "Internet Safety Act" the two bills S.436 and H.R.1076 are titled "Internet Stopping Adults Facilitating the Exploitation of Today's Youth Act" in true GOP fashion. No senator or representative would want to be up for re-election after voting no on stopping the "exploitation of youth".
